The Committee

Our club is run entirely by volunteers. The Committee is elected at the AGM in February each year. We are always in need of more assistance and are happy to see new faces on the committee. If you want to be involved in how the club is run, please consider being on the committee.

Or, if you just want to give a hand with getting things done, or have some new ideas, please come and see us.

Captain – the person to see for any and all queries relating to equipment and facilities use and rowing at ANA.

Stuart Ridgway - Captain for 2008 -2009 season

President – The person to see for public relations issues, promoting the club and any general queries about the club in the wider environment.

James Carpenter - President

Back for a third stint as President in 2008, most of you will know James from the highly successful 'ANA Wines' campaign which has been a great fundraiser for the club and also as a member of the club's ever increasing men's veteran group.

James has served on several committees before joining ANA in 2003. He has been involved in all of the club's fundraising activities during his time in the club and will be looking to continue that focus along with reviewing several areas of the clubs operations.

Treasurer – The person to see for anything to do with fees and money.

Siok Cheng - Treasurer

Proving that you can never have too many good people in charge when it comes to money, Siok has held the role of Assistant Treasurer for the past several years and now steps up to the full rank of Treasurer. Siok has done a great job of keeping the money coming in, chasing debtors and making sure the bills get paid and he's played a big part in helping the club get to the strong financial position it's in today.

Siok is also the driving force behind the majority of the catering efforts run by the club each year as well as being Chef in Charge of the Sunday morning breakfasts.

Secretary – The person to see for anything to do with membership and general queries

Daina Tamasauskas - Secretary

Racing Vice Captain – backing up the Captain on all racing issues, or other Captain’s duties when others aren’t around.

Kay Jansen - Racing Vice Captain

Recreational Vice Captain - backing up the Captain on all recreational issues, or other Captain’s duties when others aren’t around.

Vice President - In charge of entertainment!!

Laurie Anderson - Vice President & Head Coach

After 5 years excellent service as club President, Laurie is back for a sixth year in the Vice President's role.

Laurie started rowing at Aquinas College in 1966 and rowed in three Head of the River regattas, stroking the winning second VIII in '68 and the winning first VIII in '69 and '70.

He joined Joondalup Rowing Club in 1970 and over a six year period stroked the winning Junior VIII at the New Zealand championships, rowed in the King's Cup four times (winning in '73), won the Australian coxed and coxless four titles in '74, represented Australia in the coxed four in Moscow ('73) and coxless four in Lucerne ('74) and won numerous state open sweep oar titles. Phew !

Laurie joined ANA at the end of '76 and was part of the club's winning state coxless four as well as representing the club and the state at the national championships, before a serious back injury put an end to his career. He came back to rowing as a state boat race official in the early 90's and became an Australian umpire in 1998. Laurie has also coached Christ Church to consecutive Head of the River titles in 2002 and 2003, which is the first time it's been done at the school for over 40 years and has continued the tradition with another victory in 2005.

John Westall - Honorary Vice President

John started rowing in the UK in 1963 (yes, that’s not a typo) while still at school. He joined Kingston Rowing Club as a cox in the same year and rapidly came to the conclusion that as a cox, he made a good rower. This view being shared by the club, John began rowing for KRC and soon found himself in the stroke seat of a Novice 8. He has been convinced ever since, that if God intended us to scull, he would have made it a lot easier.

During his racing career, John has been the youngest ever stroke of a men’s 8, in the Tideway Head of the River Race, at age 15, which he believes is still the case, has rowed at just about every regatta in the UK, including some really obscure ones when pot hunting in a coxed 4 one year and has competed in the Thames Cup at Henley Royal Regatta several times.

After three successful years as President of ANA, John has continued in the role of Vice President.

Glyn Heath - Committee member

Glyn started rowing in 1977 at Monmouth, South Wales, and continued at University College of North Wales and Norwich before migrating to Australia in 1988. He spent two seasons at Perth and Collegians before joining ANA in 1989. He has competed continuously over the last 24 years and has not had a season without winning at least one rowing race. Glyn represented Wales as a cox for two years and has competed for various clubs in a number of national title events in UK and Australia. In recent years, Glyn has concentrated on sculling and won several sculling events at State Championships.

Out of the past 15 years, he has been Captain of ANA four times and Treasurer twelve (yes, there was one year where he did both !). Glyn was the driving force behind the club's relocation from Canning Bridge to Bayswater, introduced recreational rowing and the concept of the beginners regatta to the club and has played a major part in the the expansion (and upkeep) of the boat fleet from the 14 largely wooden boats held by the club in 1988 to meet the needs of both racing and recreational members. He also actively pursues any opportunities for improvement to the club facilities.
