Coming events for the club and it's members.......

Catch up on what's happening or check out the old news from - 2000,  2001

Yes, it's been another big year for ANA Rowing Club and congratulations to everyone who helped make it happen both on and off the water.  The club's final event of the year was the traditional Boxing Day get together down at the clubroom's and fittingly, it was attended by some of the club's more notable/notorious past members.  John and Peter Kirwin, Mal Janes and Mike Winslade dropped in the check out some of the changes from their days such as the relative lack of wooden boats, the vastly improved size of the beer fridge (still not big enough...) and the fact that you can now stand in our boat shed and not touch both walls at the same time with outstretched arms (you really had to row out of the old Canning shed to appreciate that one).

On the fun side, Shona proved she can swing a mean cricket bat and Glyn showed his worthiness for a spot in the English team by dropping everything that came his way !  A cruisy day was had by all.

Have a happy and safe New Year everyone and see you on the water in 2003.

Full results from the latest time trial held on Saturday the 14th December can be downloaded here.   Congratulations to all ANA members who competed along with a big well done to Phil, John T and  all the parents who helped out on the day.

Full results from the second time trail held on Saturday the 23rd can be downloaded here.

Cathy Perkins from Riverside RC in Adelaide has kindly sent through some photos from the World Masters.  They tend to show Ian either (a) sleeping or (b) setting about winning a silver medal.  For the record, Ian won his medal in the Mixed C quad (which he stroked) along with Cathy Perkins, Mal Fergusson and Gordana Kalanj from Riverside Rowing Club. The time was 3.31.84 (less than 1 second behind the winners) in apparently shocking conditions.

A full list of times from Sunday morning's 5km time trial at Canning Bridge can be downloaded here.

None of the ANA competitors made it above the Sub-elite cut off prognostic of 80.64%, although we did have the two next positions being Russel Thomas on 80.39% and Cade and Ben on 80.10% with Charmain just outside at 79.95%.  Catherine Timms was not far off the mark either at 79.04% (29 secs off the cut off).  Hopefully the trial next weekend will bring this bunch above the cut off, as they will be more familiar with the course and what is required in the time trial.

Well done to all members who made the effort to get down to Canning by 5am and give the club a healthy representation on the water.  Less impressive was the fact that no-one turned up to unload the boats back at the shed.  A big thanks from all who rowed should go to Glyn for getting the boats down to Canning Bridge at some horrendous hour and then unloading them back at the shed once it was all over.

The club's soon to be new lightweight double/pair (pending a successful inspection) is now in the third bay.  As mentioned, once the boat has been given the thumbs up, the club will be purchasing it from Glyn (sure you're not going to regret that old bloke !).  It's a '94 kevlar Sykes, suitable for average crew weights of around 75kg and it should fill the club requirements for a competitive racing double/pair at that level nicely, given that it comes with both sets of riggers.

The Annual Dinner has come and gone and it was a great night enjoyed by all.  A write up of the night's events will be posted shortly as soon as Lambsy scans some photos for me !  In the meantime, congratulations to the following award winners on the night.

Best Oarsperson:  Cade Zulsdorf
Most Improved Male:  Richard Wheatcroft
Most Improved Female:  Gillian King
Best Veteran:   Steve Bourne
Best Maiden:  Jeff Overton
Best Club Novice:  Michelle Blake
Best Sub Junior:  Alex Hayes
Best Club Person:  Siok Cheng

There has been an increasing number of instances in the last few seasons of people breaking club equipment and then simply slinking away without owning up to it.  The motivation for this sort of behavior is somewhat of a mystery.  Why not inform the club that there is some damaged equipment in the shed and (a) give the club a chance the make the necessary repairs and (b) find out the circumstances of the accident so perhaps something can be done about it to make sure it never happens again.  If it's an accident, then the worst you'll have to endure is a bit of embarrassment explaining what happened.  Big deal, so you hit a spit post.  It's not the end of the world.  There's very few rowers who haven't hit something on the water at some stage of their career and nobody's perfect.    The alternative is that if you damage club equipment and don't have the courage to own up to it, someone's going to find out and you will be presented with the damage bill as a reward for your dishonesty.

Perhaps the person who used Phil's private blades, hit a spitty with them and cracked them and then simply put them back on the shelf might like to stick their hand up and come clean.  It is most likely the same accident where the Howell scull Q1 had it's bowball knocked off and one of the riggers bent sometime on the afternoon of Sunday the 20th or Monday the 21st.  Any takers ?

Surely it goes without saying that private blades are off limits to everyone but their owners.  Likewise, please do not use the ultralight scull blades unless you have been given approval by the club captain, as they are required for the group of members going to the nationals in April.  Excuses of "i didn't know" are a joke and should be treated as such.  If you're not 100% sure if your allowed to use a certain piece of equipment, find out rather than just taking it.

Every year, the club holds it's annual rowing weekend at Big Denys' family property on the banks of the Murray river (about 1k past the pub) at Ravenswood.  This is always a great weekend and a chance to get in some socialising and a row or two on a beautiful stretch of river.

Dates: Sat the 16th and Sun' the 17th of November.  Rough timetable of events is as follows:

Saturday:
9am - Boat loading at ANA, depart 10:30am
12 noon - Arrive at Ravenswood.  Boat unloading and sandwich lunch.
2pm to 5pm - Rowing on the Murray, possibly with some light-hearted competitions in the Lake and Saxby for scratch crews, combining members who don't normally get to row together.
8pm - Lamb-on-a-spit barbecue party.  BYOG.

Sunday:
7am to 8am - Brekky
8am to 11am - Rowing
11am to 1pm - Boat loading and lunch
3pm - Boat unloading at ANA

Family and friends will be very welcome. Make it a relaxing weekend in a beautiful and tranquil riverside location.  Non-rowers can try their luck in the tub or hitch a ride in the speedy.

Accommodation:  There are 13 beds/mattresses at the house (BYO sleeping bag / bedding).  These are available to be reserved on the booking sheet on the noticeboard on a strictly first-in-best-dressed basis. They are now being booked fast - about half a dozen still remaining as of 27 Oct.  Otherwise there is plenty of space for camping and for those who like more creature comforts, there are motel units and chalets available at the pub about 800 meters away.

Cost for the weekend breaks down into 3 components.

Food.  One flat rate of $20 for all adults (and teenage rowers) attending. This includes the lamb-on-a-spit barbie, Sunday brekky, and both lunches. For kids, we'll figure out reduced prices depending upon how big and hungry they are.

Accommodation.  $10 for a bed/mattress. $5 for campers (kids free).

Boat fee.  $5 for all rowers.

Last year's Ravenswood event was great. This year's will be even better.  Don't miss it !

The club's annual (very) social rowing camp at Ravenswood will be held this year on the 16th and 17th of November.  More info' should be out shortly or else see Nick Suess for full details.

A Level 1 coaching course will be held at Canning Bridge on the weekend of the 2nd and 3rd of November.  Yes, this is very short notice.  Full details can be found by downloading the information flyer (ignore the dates, they're wrong) and if you intend participating, please also download the coaching enrollment form.

The club will subsidise part of the cost for fully paid up members, provided they perform some coaching duties at club level.  If you're serious about your rowing either as a competitor or a coach, you'll get some invaluable information from this course.  Get in touch with Glyn or John T asap if you're interested.

The new Johnston boat arrived today and is currently sitting on the trailer in the third bay, along with both the sweep and scull riggers.  It looks the goods and appears to have made the trip across with no problems.  Thanks should go to Neville Kempton from Swans, who covered the boat for the trip back and also delivered it directly to our shed this morning.

Neville also advised that Dean (i think) Croker will be setting up a business to provide re-shafting of blades here in Perth, which hopefully means we'll no longer have to send them across to the east every time there's a breakage.

The Club's recently purchased, second hand Johnston coxed quad/four is in transit back to Perth from the World Masters in Ballarat.  The boat is constructed with a carbon and fibreglass vacuum bagged foam sandwich shell, canvasses and decks, moulded fully adjustable foot stretchers, Rowfitt alloy Wing riggers, wide track slides, and double action seats.  This boat is designed as a club/school racer for intermediate grades with added durability through its foam composite construction compared to honeycomb.  The weight is within 10% of the FISA minimum.  The boat was manufactured in 2001 and was held by Somerset College in Queensland, before being advertised for sale in September.  The boat was sold by Somerset College as a result of upgrading to a FISA minimum weight honeycomb racing hull.  The boat specifications are length 13.09m, width at widest part of 533mm and capable of fielding midweight crews.  There, does that answer everyone's questions !

The logistics of getting the boat over to Perth have been challenging, with transport of the hull and quad riggers to Ballarat from the Gold Coast and then arranging a set of sweep riggers from Tasmania on a separate trailer so that the boat could be used at the World Masters.  This allowed space on the WA trailer to get the boat back to Perth by allowing one less four to be taken to Victoria and represents a substantial saving in transport costs for the club.  The riggers were co-ordinated by Nick Suess, who has kindly deferred settlement until April.  Nick used his contacts with Rowfitt to have a set of riggers made up from measurements provided by Somerset and despite much potential for disaster, we are advised that the riggers fit.

As it turns out, the four was not used at the World Masters due to a crew scratching and thereby avoiding the requirement to double up on fours.  The boat should arrive in Perth in the next few days.  A big thank you should go to all who have helped in identifying, inspecting, sourcing the riggers and co-ordinating the transport back to Perth.

At its October meeting last night, the Committee considered the purchase of a second Johnston four/quad.  Whilst there is a need for a second upgraded boat in this class, it was felt that a proper evaluation of the new boat should occur before committing to a purchase of a second (new) Johnston four/quad.  Johnston is manufacturing a number of boats for the WA market and is bringing a trailer to Perth in December.  It was felt that this would not allow sufficient time to evaluate the four before committing $15,000 to the purchase of a new boat.  As a short term measure, ANA will invest in a set of quad riggers for one of the existing coxed fours and then consider how the Johnston goes in the 2003 season.  This will allow a non-pressured decision on a new Johnston to be taken either at the tail end of, or following the 2003 season.

In the meantime, the club will pursue opportunities to put in place a midweight kevlar pair/double, an additional scull from the Academy and upgrade either one or two ergometers to model C's.  The club will also keep a watching brief on opportunities to provide an additional recreational single skin fibreglass double and match up some odd scull blades into sets through second hand purchases. Further details of Johnston boats are available at http://www.johnstonracing.com/Quad_Four.htm

Please check the Message Board for all club news and event info' until further notice.

The improvements to the fleet keep coming with ANA agreeing to purchase an 18 month old Johnston stern coxed quad.  The boat is from the same manufacturer and is the same hull as was on display at the Fremantle regatta earlier in the year, but with a more durable carbon foam construction as opposed to honeycomb. It's designed as a general purpose boat for schoolgirl, schoolboy and club rowing and whilst Johnston indicate it can cope with crews up to an average 95kg weight, it will be more suited to a 70 to 80kg average. The boat is within 10% of the minimum FISA weight and will provide a competitive boat for both Novice and SubJunior crews.

Initially the boat will only have quad riggers, but the intention will be to add camlock sweep riggers before the 2003 season. The boat is currently in QLD (Gold Coast to be exact) and we are hopeful that it can find it's way back to Perth on the WA trailer taken over to Melbourne for the World Masters in early October (to arrive back in Perth for mid October). This will provide a much more competitive coxed quad for our subjunior, schoolgirl and novice rowers and ultimately novice sweep crews. It will also allow the club to evaluate whether to purchase a second Johnston 4X+/4+direct from the manufacturer for the 2003 season.  Click on the picture to check it out.

Johnson Quad

It's on Saturday, the 26th of October at the Barocco Italian restaurant in Northbridge.  Download the flyer for more information (you'll need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view it).  Shona, i can't believe you left Armani off the list of what to wear !

With a last minute rush of entries, ANA took a reasonable sized contingent down to Bunbury over the weekend.  With blue skies and calm(ish) water for most of the day, our crews fared quite well in the qualifying heats.  Three subjunior scullers, two open doubles, two subjunior doubles, two women's novice singles, a women's novice double, the men's open four, both men's novice fours, the women's novice eight and the vet double, and probably a few others I cannot recall made it through to their four lane finals.

The first of the finals took place with cloud beginning to close in and rain falling over the ocean.  The open pair B final saw two ANA crews lead a Wests crew before Jeff and Rob decided to liven things up a little and crash into Cade and Ben who in turn crashed into Wests.  The result being the race was stopped and awarded to Cade and Ben.  The men's novice four a short while later saw ANA 1 (Motteram) finish half a length down on Bunbury with ANA 2 (Westall) in third.  The women's novice single final had a closely contested race for second between Wests and the two ANA crews before Catherine was disqualified for steering infringements.  Anita put in a good performance taking out third in the final and a heat win in her first novice race. The open fours saw ANA romp it in ahead of University of WA in a pretty impressive win.

About this time, things became a little more interesting with the front hitting the inlet and rowers from all clubs hanging onto any boat that was not tied down. All scull events were cancelled and crews that were on the water completed their races in some interesting conditions.  The wind and waves in the novice doubles final was something the ANA crew had not dealt with before with Mahoney and Gillean forced to trail in second to Swans despite dominating in their semi-finals.  The subjuniors also struggled with the weather not having experienced similar conditions on the sheltered river at Bayswater and trailed Swans home in the final.  The Women's eight was the only crew remaining out on the water for their final and took and took the win with a row-over.  However, the nature of the win mattered not and the celebration by the crew of its first win was enthusiastic !  The vet double meanwhile decided to take the bull by the horns and led the way in boating for their final - forcing the Bunbury and Swans crews to also emerge from the shelter of the boatshed.  They need not have bothered however, as when the crews reached the start line the regatta was abandoned and the crews forced to return to shore.

A very depleted group remained for the prize giving and the abandoned finals appearing to be randomly allocated to the various crews who had entered.  The women's maiden fours were awarded to ANA as was the Open double and Veteran double.  The much looked forward to repeat show down between Lambsy and Jeff and Glyn and Steve in the Open double final will have to wait for a later regatta.

The evening's activities centered around a relatively low key function at Bunbury Rowing Club, dampened by the howling gale and driving rain outside.  The club relocated to the Quest units on the far side of the course for the rest of the evening where Nat Milne of the women's novice four, single handedly provided the evenings entertainment and proved conclusively that it was not possible for her to keep quiet for longer than 53 seconds !  The incessant chatter finally driving John T from the unit altogether to sleep in his car.  Glyn is considering suing for hearing loss and Ivan for character assassination.

Crews awoke on Sunday morning to clear skies, but slightly blustery conditions for the head race.  The Women's novice four - much the worse for the red wine from the evening before - did not front at Eaton, but the more hardy soles of Steve and Glyn, Cade and Ben, John T and Ivan along with Shona and Adie, took to the water in small boats and mostly small oars.  Catherine Timms found a comfortable spot in the coxes seat for a Westies novice four.  Needless to say the fine weather did not last long with a small front passing through just as the crews were being set off.  Steve and Glyn were the only winners taking the fastest mens double by 50 seconds from their main Swans rivals and in so doing passing five eights.

A big thanks should go to Ivan, who again stopped over specifically to tow back the trailer for those crews competing on the Sunday.

Last weekend's Schoolgirl Head of the River regatta provided the opportunity for a number of ANA members from non-rowing schools to participate in schoolgirl events as unlike the schoolboy competition run by the PSA, the schoolgirl's regattas are open to all comers.  ANA has within its membership around 12 girls from eight non-rowing schools and well over half of these girls have competed throughout the schoolgirl season which ended with the Head of the River regatta.

Congratulations to Alex Hayes from Mt Lawley HS who picked up a win in the year 9 singles A division with Catherine Timms (Carine HS) a mere 1.5 sec's back in third place and Georgie Dicks (St Mary's HS) in seventh.  Freya Barnsby from Carine HS and Chloe Bagient from Mt Lawley HS rowed well in the B final but missed out on the placings.  The other winner on the day was Claire Martin from Mercedes College who won the schoolgirls second singles with Mahoney Taylor from Chisholm back in fifth place.  Well done also to Agatta Halliden from Mercedes for her fifth place in the year 10 A division singles and to all the girls who competed on the day.

Captain John reports that the regatta was run in great style with plenty of colour, exciting races and the odd wailing bagpipe (we'll take your word on that one JT !) along with plenty of healthy regatta food (ie: bacon and egg burgers).  John would also like to express his congratulations to everyone who competed on the day.

Points standings not including last weekend's Westies regatta are as follows:

Swans - 6978,  Bunbury - 4401,  Wests - 3302,  ANA - 3166,  UWA - 2973,  Murdoch - 1537,  Freo - 1491,  ECUP - 801,  Curtin - 340.

With the prospect of intermittent rain and hail showers throughout the day, very few of our members were looking forward to the Westies regatta on Saturday.  As it turned out, the showers only lasted for the morning and the predicted strong winds did not eventuate leaving the afternoon quite rowable.  The regatta did not start off well with five clubs being forced to use one narrow boating area due to the presence of the moored starting pontoon ready for the schoolgirls head of the river next weekend.  Three of our first five crews boated were disqualified for being late to the start having queued several boats deep for access to the boating area.  One crew managed to miss both of their races for the day through no fault of their own and no doubt there will be an attempt to fine ANA for failing to show to the start line despite the umpires being informed of the boating problems  (Editors note: and they wonder why we have trouble keeping people involved in this sport).  The immediate signs for improvement did not look good with the first rain fronts fast approaching and two of our crews using non-regulation numbers to the ire of the umpires (and no doubt fines to the club in due course).

The club had some good wins:

But also a tale of what might have been:

Mention in dispatches:

ANA Rowing Club has terminated its school sculling courses due to rising insurance costs.  The premium to maintain the insurance levels required by the Department of Education for 2002/3 would have been over $1,200 higher than that of 2001/2.  The resultant increase in fees would not support continuation of the courses for the three participating schools.

The club has been running school sculling courses at Bayswater on weekdays for over ten years.  During this period, in excess of 1,000 schoolchildren from non-rowing schools have been taught sculling technique through these courses.  However, there has been little continuation from these students in the club environment.

The club's activities at the Avon Descent ran relatively smoothly despite some atrocious weather, due to good planning and the depth of volunteers who
helped run the club's various fundraising activities.  Over 50 of the club's members helped out during the day in some form, either setting up in the morning, hauling boats, catering or promoting the club.

The low river levels, strong headwind and driving rain meant a slow race and as such, the first shift had a relatively easy time both on boat lifting and catering as spectators and support crews were late arriving at Bayswater.  The second shifts had much more to contend with as the crews came in throughout the afternoon and into the evening, although spectator numbers were well down due to the weather.  The paddle craft in particular found the going tough with over eighty paddle craft still on the water in the dark pushing into some very aggressive rain fronts over the last 30km.

The club extended its boat lifting and catering until after dark but started to pack up around 6.30pm.  By this time, the club volunteers had thinned a little and it was left to the few remaining to pull down the marquee, shed and pack away the food stalls.  Whilst everyone who helped probably deserves a mention, special thanks should go to Allan Y, Chris Morris, Chris Marinelli, Sharron, Shona, Kerrie, Aidie, Dave M, Cade, Pam and Peter Z as well as Siok, John T and Glyn as the last few standing with the packing away.  When the club was finally shut up after 7pm there were still 18 competitors battling the headwinds towards Hinds Reserve after almost an hour of darkness with only a token recording team and concerned support crew to greet them.

The finances will take a little while to work out.  The boat hauling and competitor catering was undertaken for a flat fee and should generate $1,400 or so.  The catering was impacted by the lack of spectators and adverse weather and whilst there was a bit of a late run when support crews arrived, the return will be down a little on last years' record.

The event should not pass without mention of a few notable happenings:

Firstly Richo did make it to the line although he had us worried as he only just made it before dark.  Secondly John T's son Peter took line honours in the plastic single division and lastly John T who finished the day in the wars not only having to dive off the jetty to retrieve the dinghy, but later having the roof of the shed drop onto his head after the time recorders had kindly left the front wall of the shed detached.  Fortunately it takes more than this to stop John and he carried on leading from the front.

Rowing WA would like former oarsmen and oarswomen to resume their contact with rowing and to this end, are launching the ‘Inaugural State Championship Dinner’ to be held at the Canning Bridge Rowing Centre on 25 September 2002 (the Wednesday before the State Championships).  Please click here to download the flyer with more information.

This year's Annual Dinner will be held on Saturday, the 26th of October upstairs at the Barocco Italian restaurant in Northbridge.  Make sure you're there for the big celebration and awards presentation to wind up the season.  More details soon.

Just incase anyone was thinking about getting out for a quick scull this Sunday - no chance !  The beach will be blocked off by fencing for the Avon Descent finishing area and the club will be heavily involved in clearing and setting up the boatshed for catering.  It not all bad news though, as a couple of hours helping setting up is just as good for you as a row.

Click here to check out the duty roster for this weekend's Avon Descent.   If your name's not on it and you can help out, call John T, Glyn or Siok asap.

The Geelong International Masters Regatta is to be held the week before the World Masters Regatta on the 5th & 6th of October.  This will be a warm up regatta, with the same preset order of events as the Masters.  The details can be found at www.coriobayrc.com  (follow the links to Notices and then Geelong Int' Masters) or by downloading this flyer (Note:  File is in .pdf format so you will need Adobe Acrobat to read it).

Once again, a great day was had by all with a big turn out of rowers making the sunny, boozy, merry 16km row up to Sandalford Winery.  Lambsy, Jen' and 'big' Ben kept everyone on the water supplied with regular stops for champagne, strawberries and lollies before 76 people sat down to a sumptuous, but somewhat late lunch as a result of late comers, no shows and those pesky Avon Descent speedies !  Well done to everyone involved in organising the day and making it another huge success.

There'll be a full write up shortly but in the meantime, check up some of the action below.  Click on the photo's for the bigger picture.  The organisers would also like to express their grateful thanks to Lycopodium, SMC and Healthways/Sunsmart for their generous contributions to the event and also to Pierre Pougnault from Rowing WA for his assistance.

Group shot    Westies & ANA    Young guns !    Lunch time.    MC and Michelle start drinking !    Everybody loves derigging - not !

Bus trip back.    Boats out via the pontoon    Adie's quad    Baby Ben coxing already !    Starting 'em young.

As Captain John has already covered on the message board, it was another round of good results from the weekends regatta.  Well done to Lambsy and Jeff for a win in the MO2X, Cath' T for the SJ1X and MC's crew for their final novice four win.  That now puts MC, the two Claires and Michelle 'Hitman' Blake up into Maidens.  Well done gals !  Well done also to Alex in SJ1X, Jeff in MO1X, Cath' and Mahoney in FN2X, The Angels in FN4X+ and JW's Old Buggars in MN4+ for their top three placings in the finals.

On the down side, there was an altercation between the boat trailer and that mongrel of a tree in the middle of the driveway at Canning on the way out resulting in some damage to a scull, one of the coxed quads and the Drok (actually, it was touch and go as to whether the Drok would do more damage to the tree rather than the other way round !).  It's important to remember that the commitment to looks after the club's racing fleet in transit extends to everyone who attends regattas, not just the poor volunteer who has to tow the trailer.  No matter how experienced the driver is, there should always be someone to watch both the front and the back of the trailer when it's being taken out of a tight spot and someone to follow the trailer home if at all possible.  If everyone takes a turn you'll never have to do it more than once a year, so please help out.

Names for the Sandalford 'Extravaganza' are being finalised and all those who said they were coming need to commit now please.  If you could reply to Richard via email or on the website's message board with your name and that of spouse/friend/mistress, your choice of scull/sweep or either and whether both people (if applicable) can row.  Please also advise if you intend taking the bus back from Sandalford or if you are making your own way home.  Lastly, if you know of any other people who are interested, please spread the word or give Richard their contact details as the best marketing is word of mouth.

Details on the day are as follows.  10:30am - gather at ANA HQ, Garratt Rd Bridge, Bayswater for a crew briefing.  Crews will embark in eights, fours and quads (slowest first) for leisurely 16km row to Sandalford Wineries with a drinks stop on the way (or every kilometer if you're in Steve Monk's crew !) for champagne and strawberries.  Once at Sandalford, crews will need to de-rig their boats and load them onto trailer.  Once done, everyone can settle down to a gourmet buffet in our own private room (and Sandalford have guaranteed their will be plenty for all this year !).  The bus will arrive around 4pm to take everyone back with drop off's at either Mt Lawley or Subiaco for continued revelry.

Last year's event was an absolute sensation so if you want to be there, get in fast.  Also, a few volunteers are needed to help with setting up a temporary jetty at Sandalford on Sat' the 20th and a couple of drivers are needed to tow the boat trailers back on the Sunday.  Please get back to Richard asap if you can help out.

Despite not being our greatest regatta in recent times, ANA managed to take home 695 points (equal second with Bunbury) from last weekend's Freo regatta.  Swans/WAIS were the big winners on the day with 1178 points.  This has allowed us to leapfrog Westies into third place on the overall points tally which currently sits as below.

Swans - 4768,  Bunbury - 3293,  ANA - 2763,  Wests - 2586,  UWA - 1850,  MURC - 1244,  FRC - 1086,  ECUP - 394,  CUBC - 80

Overall the Canning regatta on the weekend was an organisational nightmare with the regatta program losing 15 minutes for every 15 minutes of scheduled racing.  There were insufficient umpires on the water to follow races and then get back to the start for the successive races to be started on time.  When the regatta became more than 40 minutes behind schedule, event scheduling descended into chaos, with some crews waiting at the start for crews which were also at the start waiting to start races in different event categories.  The situation eventually became farcical with crews which had been waiting at the 2000m start for over an hour starting themselves with an incomplete field (with all umpires and the starter dealing the delayed racing at the 1000m start).  After two or three races with crews spending 45 minutes to 1 hour waiting at the start in some fairly rough water and racing creeping to 1.5 hours behind schedule, many crews could not be bothered to boat for their finals.  Phew !

ANA did not have much in the way of stunning success at the regatta.  However, the results we did get showed a reversal of form in sweep versus scull performance.

Winners:
Lambsy and Jeff - both maiden pairs and maiden double sculls.  In both cases it was almost last man standing for these guys, being the only pair to show up to the final and one of only two doubles to show up to the start of the final.  However, these guys showed they have the form to win in these categories as after all, they made it through to the finals.

Gill King and Mahoney Taylor - an impressive win in the women's novice double scull in a big field.

Women's novice eight - who showed that they could hold their own against maiden eights in the open B eights final.

Other good performances included Catherine Timms, who missed out in the final of the subjunior sculls by less than a boat length and the club gained a second and third placing in the novice fours behind a form swans four.  Steve and Glyn faltered in their efforts to hold off a revamped Bunbury crew in the mens veteran doubles.

The Adelaide four has now been delivered to the shed courtesey of Johnston Racing (for a small fee) and Rob Strachan.  Despite initial concerns about the condition of the boat, it looks in decent form for its age and should serve the club well as a transition racing boat for novice men before moving to the more delicate racing shells.

Our three Youth Cup representatives fly out to Sydney on Wednesday and will be racing on Saturday and Sunday against crews from the other states and territories as well as representatives from New Zealand.  Good luck Charmaine, Jess and Cade.

After a superb response last week to the fundraising dinner held at the club, we are looking to do another one this Wed' the 26th on a slightly different format.  Once again the profits will go directly to help our three reps; Cade Zulsdorf, Jess Wright and Charmaine Baran, pay for airfares to compete in the Youth Cup to be held over East in a couple of weeks.  Last week we raised approx $260 - a fantastic turn-out and a pleasant convivial evening was had by all.

This Wed', we are having a BRING 'N' BURN night. Bring your own choice of meat or vegetarian pseudo meat, have it charred to a fifth of its pre-cooked size by our famous international BBQ chefs and then tuck in to some salad and baked potatoes (Snags also available for a surcharge).  Bring along $5 for the Youth Cup guys and enough for you to enjoy your fill from the bar.

The World Cup Semi-finals will be on TV and the photo-board will be up and running (please , more photos needed !!).  The next dinner night is planned as a curry night near the end of July - so PLEASE, come down, have a drink with your club mates and have some food as it will be the last one for a while.

The date has been set - Sunday the 21st of July.  Stay tuned for more info shortly.

Wed 19th June ( Tomorrow!) we are having a club night - involving a  BBQ, (healthy) food, unhealthy food, drink and perhaps 'wine, women & song' if all goes well... Food will start around 7pm-ish  - so there's enough time to get down for a row then a nosh-up afterwards !  Any profits from the night will go to our Club rowers representing WA in the Youth Cup over east in two-three weeks - a good enough reason to get down to the club, meet fellow rowers and have a drink.

The club is also hopeful of starting a 'photographic' history board incorporating photos of regattas, parties and events attended by ANA members over the recent past.  Please bring any shots you have and we'll mount them on a board in the clubhouse and add to OUR history at regular intervals..! (Photos will be kept safe from pilfering hands !).

The promising start to the season continues with some good results at the Mettam long distance race held on the weekend.

Fastest double                - Glyn Heath, Steve Bourne
Fastest pair                    - Rob Bell, Jeff Overton
Mens Veteran Single      - Ian Hilton
Womens Novice single   - Mahoney Taylor
Womens Novice four     - M-C Dobrowolski, Claire Whitelaw, Claire Martin, Michelle Blake - cox Victoria Fells.

Win of the day Womens Novice four who cleaned up by 1 minute 22 seconds.  Also well done to Natasha's crew, who came second in the women's novice fours.  Times for all crews for both the 2 and 3 mile events can be found here.  Apologies for the format.

Three ANA members have been selected for the Western Australia team to compete in the Youth Cup in Sydney in early July.  After a series of ergo tests, time trials and seat racing last week, Cade Zulsdorf, Charmaine Baren and Jessica Wright have been named in the team while Chris Kamisnskis, Claire Martin and Gillean King missed out in the final seat racing.  These members now have some weeks of intensive training ready for the interstate racing.

Seat racing will take place this Friday at Canning to narrow down the squad of heavyweight and lightweight women's crews to compete for WA in the Youth Cup.  ANA has two guys and four girls who have made it through the initial testing.  Cade Zulsdorf and Chris Kaminskis are hoping to make the cut from 12 to 8 in the mens.  Charmaine Baran and Gill King in the lightweight women from 6 to 4 and Claire Martin and Jessica Wright from 12 to 8 in the women's heavy weight squad.  The final squad will be announced following the weekend.

Cade and Charmaine are the best prospects being well ahead of other contenders in testing to date.  Jessica Wright also performed very well in the single being placed fourth out of twelve, to make up for disappointing ergo results.

The club will be organising a fundraiser to help meet the costs of those selected make the trip to Penrith.  Whilst yet to be finalised, ideas include screening of a world cup soccer match  at the club.  Perhaps chosing an England match will ensure that a substantial portion of our members have an interest !

The Club has committed to jointly purchase the current Australian Mens Heavyweight eight with Rowing WA.  The white Verspoli eight was purchased for use by the Australian team at the Sydney Olympics and picked up a silver medal in the final.  The purchase will allow use of the boat by ANA for the Club season and by the Kings Cup for the next four interstate races, whereafter it will fully revert to ANA.

This purchase is a major bonus for the club and will round out the senior fleet to provide four top line competitive double/pairs, one coxless four/quad, two coxed fours and now a senior eight.  The boat will become available in late July with the club meeting most of the purchase cost from funds on hand, but likely to have to borrow up to $7,500 from the 2003 capital budget.

Check out a few of the photos below from the gent's trip over to the Australian Masters in Adelaide.  Although no one came back with a medal, everyone gave it there all, with Ian Hilton's second in the mixed C double with a Riverside Rowing Club composite crew a highlight.  The standard of competition was certainly high with numerous ex' world champions and Olympic gold medallists in attendance and congratulations also to George Xouris for taking out the regatta's Champion of Champions award.  The gents would also like to express their thanks to Riverside Rowing Club for the loan of boats and their excellent hospitality.

View the official race times here.  Well done Bunts !

Congratulations to those club members who helped organise and run the ANA regatta and head race over the weekend.  Tuesday saw a marathon draw at RWA attended by John T and Glyn Heath while Friday saw several members take time off work to help lay the course.  Special thanks should go to Glyn, Jerome, M-C, Steve Bourne and Brett Dellar, who between then laid out the buoys for the three lane course, Pam and Siok who co-ordinated the food and Chris Marinelli for co-ordinating the PA.

On the day there were many members who chipped in.  A special thanks to our speed boat drivers who spent many hours on the water, Steve W for the commentary, the food and raffle selling team under the control of Siok and Pam and all those who helped on the day setting up, providing food and raffle prizes, and organising during the day and finally packing away.

Our on water performances were pretty impressive with many wins:

MO1X - Jeff Overton
MM4X- Brett, Jerome, Steve and Glyn
MM2X Jerome and Chris Kamianskis
MV4X- Steve, Chris M, Brett and Glyn
MV2X Steve and Glyn
WN8+ M-C, Sarah, Jess, Karen, Catalina, Claire, Sharon, Michelle and Victoria
WN4+ Jess, Sarah, Karen, Catalina and Victoria
WN1X Catherine Timms
(apologies if we have missed anyone and also to those crews who filled places.  Full results not to hand).

The Federation sculls on Sunday saw a reduced field of 35 scullers brave the rain.  Special thanks should go to Siok and Pam who provided the breakfasts afterwards and to Tim who did a superb job as marshall at very short notice (ie: just after he got off the water from his morning pair's session), Roland from Guildford and starter/finish judges and time keepers Catherine and Laurie.  Club winners included:

Glyn Heath - Vet A-C
Mahoney Taylor - Womens novice and J18
Catherine Timms - Womens J16

With both of these events now behind us this leaves just the Avon Descent as our remaining core fundraiser of the year - August 3rd.

Six of the clubs oldies (or should we refer to them as gentlemen rowers ?)  have set off hare and tortoise like across the Nullabor (car and aircraft) to do battle in the Australian Masters Regatta in Adelaide this coming weekend.  The SA Govt has granted special permission for Westlakes to remain open for the event, even though all other Adelaide rowers have been forced to train elsewhere due to a weed invasion.

John Westall, Nick Suess, Tony Lalor, Ian Smith, Ivan Albertini and Ian Hilton will be representing ANA in various vet C and D combinations, including composite races with Riverside RC of Adelaide.  The guys will also be getting a row in the club's elusive "Adelaide Boat" which has been languishing on a rack in Adelaide RC's boatshed since last October.  However, there are signs that the boat may finally find its way to ANA in July.  The racing is over Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so they will be back next week to fill us in on all their victories.  Good luck guys on behalf of the club.  Win big and celebrate bigger !

This weekend is going to be a test of our regatta management, with a record entry resulting in 177 races at Saturday's regatta.  For those good with maths, that means one race approximately every three minutes from kick off at 10 am until sunset at 5.30 pm, so there'll be plenty of action on the water.

We still need three or so more helpers to lay the course on Friday afternoon from 1.30 pm onwards (contact Glyn 9238 3468) and also helpers on the day (contact John Tomczak).  It is important that there is a good turnout of support from those not racing, as those involved in racing will have a full time job keeping on time for their races. For those racing, there will be no flexibility in race times due to the cascading effect this will have on the day's programme.  If you are not at the start on time for whatever reason - late boating, involved in a previous race or waiting for boats from a previous race, then tough !

We are now up to just under 40 scullers for the Federation Sculls race from Guildford Bridge on Sunday, but if anyone else wants to have a hit out - racing or recreational, there are spots available - contact Glyn 9238 3468 wk.

Yes, its a boy !  Jen and proud dad Richard gave birth to a bouncing baby boy this morning at 6.00am.  Benjamin Wheatcroft weighed in at a tiny 10lb 14oz !  Congratulations to the proud couple.

The West Australian Rowing Club is starting a rowers evening for all interested people.  They would like to invite all rowers to the club function room on Riverside Drive in the city on the first Thursday evening of every month.  Come along for a chat, a cheap drink and a chew on Anthony's soon to be famous sausage and kebab sizzle.  First event  is on Thursday June 6th, starting after work until whenever (probably around 9 - 9:30).  Sounds like a great place to get out after work and meet some people outside your own club and have a few beers while the sun sets.

Perth College is having its House Regatta this Saturday morning, 25th May, from 8-11am and not on Sunday as previously mentioned.  They'll be having quad  and 8+ races, 4 wide across the river from the 800 metres mark down to the finish.   There should be a space marked on the bank for ANA crews to put in  and take out boats, so that PC do not take up all the shore space.  Crews beware, the river will be crowded.  Also, another reminder that there is a big canoeing race starting at 8:30 am on Sunday heading upstream, so it's going to be very busy on both morning's this weekend.

From all accounts, it was a great weekend down at Bunbury with plenty of big performances both on and off the water.  Congrat's to the following winning crews:

M04X - Steve, Ian, Brett and Glyn in one of the big races of the day to come from behind in the last 30 strokes.
MO2X - Steve and Glyn
WJ1X - Charmain (Granny is back !)
MV4X -  Steve, Ian, Brett and Glyn on the line from the Swan's vet crew
MV2X Steve and Glyn
WO2X B final - Charmain and Gillian

Well done also to the following hard fought for seconds:

WN8 -  just pipped by Westies (MC and Lambsy's crews combined)
WN4+ - 2nd for MC's crew and 3rd for Rachel's crew with almost a dead heat between them, three quarters of a length down on Murdoch
MN4+ -  John Westall's crew with a big thankyou to Murdoch
WN4X+ - Karen's crew apparently looking very slick
WSjr 1X and WN1X - Catherine Timms who rowed herself into the ground with a couple of great performances.

There were also some very pleasing first time performances from Lambsy's novice women and the second novice men's crew, as well as the women's novice quads.

Embarrassing moments of the day, Steve who put his blades in back to front when boating for the MV2X, followed very closely by Glyn who did the same in  the MO4X (its amazing what you can learn after 25 years of rowing although lack of oxygen from the preceding race played a part !)  Missing in action award - Toto who we have it on good authority only returned to his room at 5 am in the morning !.  Silence is golden award - Catherine Timms who participating in the 40 hr famine, opted for 40 hours of not speaking !  The dedication award - Ivan for stopping down on Sunday to tow the trailer back and writing a consulting report from the balcony of his hotel despite not racing that day.  Now that's the club spirit !

All in all a very enjoyable weekend with ANA crews showing that they're right up their in their categories and not far off the pace already early in the season.

This is a challenge race for sculls over 6.5km between Point Reserve Bassendean and Hinds Reserve Bayswater.  Come and benchmark yourself against some of the best scullers in the State.  Schoolboys, schoolgirls, former racing members and recreational rowers with a competitive streak are most welcome.  We are hopeful that most of Rowing WA's affiliated clubs and schools will be represented.  For more information, download the flyer with all the details and get the entry form here.

The club still needs names for a lot of the boats in the shed and we'd like to finalise this by the next committee meeting.  Some 22-23 new names are needed along the theme of either; Aboriginal names, past servants of the club or Australian native flora and fauna.  Suggestions should go to Richard either by e-mail or written and posted in the suggestion box in time for the Committee meeting next month. Also, names should have some explanation behind them, ie Aboriginal names - what they mean, etc.

The WA Rowing Club is throwing a big party next weekend in the in the club's function room - The Stroke It Party !!!

Where - WA Rowing Club. Riverside Drive, Perth CBD. (Next to the Bell Tower)

When - Next weekend, Saturday 25th May. 7.30 pm until 1:00 pm.

How Much - $10.00 entry at the door which includes free drink.

Features Include:
- Sound & Lighting Effects by DJ Evil Pete.
- The Bulldog Luge
- Twister Game
- Fire sticks display by Crazy Cal.

Please check this cool web site for more information: http://members.iinet.net.au/~gravep/

A reminder to everybody that there will be a Level 1 Coaching Course running from the 25th to the 26th May 2002.  RWA have arranged for presenters of the highest order to take the sessions and lunch will be provided on both days.  There are still several positions available and it is essential to attend this 2 day theory workshop to be accredited with your level 1 certificate.  The opportunities to complete this course are very limited so if you wish to attend, please contact Pierre on 93643895.

Well done to the ANA members who took part in the WAIS testing last weekend.  Whilst a lot of the senior athletes were away either having been selected into Australian squads or coming back from selection trials, there was a hefty participation from juniors.  ANA had eight members taking part, which is a huge  credit to Phil, Laurie and Glyn.  All of the members did well in the testing with Cade Zalsdorf and Claire Martin falling outside the WAIS sub elite cut off of 90.2% (only one junior tested made this level) but within the Rowing WA sub elite 86.2% cut off prognostic. Chris Kaminskis just missed out by 0.91% and Jessica Wright, Charmain Baran and Sarah McLellon not too far behind all between 80% and 81%.  Marnie Taylor and Gill King should also be congratulated on their first participation in these tests.  The only way is up !

It remains to be seen whether the scores are enough to earn a trip to Penrith representing WA in the Youth Cup for any of the ANA members.  This will depend upon the vagaries of WAIS and those returning from Australian selection trials.

Club members please note.  On Sunday 26th May, there is a major canoeing event commencing from Garrett Road Bridge from 0830, heading upstream.  Once the canoeists are clear of the area, Perth College will be holding a School Regatta from 1000 - 1200.  It would probably pay to be off the water a little early that day to avoid the mess and to make sure our boats aren't at risk.

They're finally out and you can find them here.

Just a few notes from Captain John that club members need to be aware of.

Bunbury Regatta 18th & 19th May:  Racing registration forms have been issued to most if not all racing members and if these forms are not in to John before the Bunbury Regatta race draw (this Tuesday) and the respective member has nominated for this regatta, they will not be accepted by Rowing WA until they have registered.  This could mean that one member of a crew not registered could cause the withdrawal of the whole crew.  Also on Bunbury, Lambsy  has booked some accommodation at the Prince of Wales Hotel which is 5 minutes walk from the rowing course.  Cost is $25 pp per night including Breaky.  Although accommodation is limited, hotel management will put in some extra beds to accommodate extra people if required.  Accommodation enquiries should be directed to Richard, either by listing names on the notice board accommodation sheet, or via Richards e-mail address.  Finally, boat loading for Bunbury will be on Friday night at 6pm.  If you don't turn up to load your boat, don't expect it to be down in Bunbury.

ANA Pennant Regatta 1st June:  Help will be required to lay the course either on Friday evening or early on Saturday morning and it's all hands on deck Saturday before the regatta commences to assist with putting up marquis and setting up the catering area.  Lots of manpower is required throughout the day to make the regatta run smoothly, so please look out for information on the notice board in the shed detailing what needs to be done and make sure you put your name down against a task.  This is the club's only regatta for the year so it's important it run's smoothly, which requires lots of help from club members.  The rating we get from our regatta goes towards the end of year ergo competition, so if we want 'back to back' new ergos, we need a good regatta !

Can be found here.

Follow the links below for important information regarding the upcoming sub elite testing.  Not only is this testing a requirement for the sub elite program, it also doubles as the first compulsory activity for those athletes who wish to be considered for selection into the WA youth cup squad, that will compete in Sydney in July.  Any questions regarding the testing or the Youth Cup may be directed to Jason Lane.

Click here to find out who were the winners and grinners from the club down at the Albany Masters.  The list is still provisional, subject to full confirmation from Albany, and may well be incomplete.  If you spot any mistakes, especially where ANA took 2 or 3 medals in one event and the finish order may be jumbled, or if any crew member's or cox's name's are incorrect, please let Nick know at nick@scull.com.au

For all other relevant information from the weekend (innuendo, tall stories, slander and downright lies), please consult the message board !

Now that Phil is out on the water 4 times a week, all coaches and crews are encouraged to make an effort and organise some training times around these sessions, so you can get as much benefit as possible from Phil's coaching expertise.  Now's the time to do it before the season gets underway in earnest.  Talk to Captain John for session times.

While we're on the subject of the Club Coach position, a general well done should go to Glyn for all the unseen effort he's put into making it happen.  A lot of time was spent preparing the submission and presenting it to Rowing WA, as well sounding out Phil to take up the job and the club's going to be the big winner out of all that work.

Check out the latest Rowing WA newsletter, containing info' about Australian team selections and youth cup team trials.

Many thanks to both the crews and volunteers who helped make the Guildford head race a success on the weekend.  Here's a brief roundup of how the ANA crews went in the 6.5km race.

WN8 - the crew overcame a frustrating row on Saturday to storm it in ahead of their rivals.  Way to go gals !  MN4+ - a bit of a lucky win with the UWA crew invalidating its status by substituting a higher status rower on the day, but its the win that counts !  Most hard done by crew - WN4+ which was forced to row with the quads for a prize due to a lack of other women's novices.  The crew almost did this beating three of the four women's novice quads, but were edged out by Fremantle.  Worry not, the season is long and the earth is patient !  The three novice quads were feeling their way a little with the youngsters dominating out of the ANA crews.  The men's eight held its own against the crews behind, maintaining its start position of 4th overall but being beaten by the open crews from Swans and UWA, as well as a maiden crew from Guildford Grammar.

The question on everyone's lips is will the club be fielding four eights for the Perth to Fremantle?  MM/V 8,  MN/V 8  and two WN8 ?  On numbers, there could even be a third women's novice eight ?

As the Tax Office says, ignorance is no defence.  So to all club members, please take 10 minutes to read the boat handling guidelines and make sure you understand your responsibilities when using the club's equipment.  The majority of damage to club equipment is happening either because people aren't concentrating or plain just don't care and it's costing thousands of dollars every years.  Think before you lift.

Click here to view the race draw and start times for this weekend's race.

Its official.  Phil Jurjevich has accepted the position of part time coaching mentor for the club.  Phil will continue his coaching responsibilities at Trinity and will also provide an average of four sessions a week to ANA.  His primary role between now and October is to act as a roving coach, helping club coaches with their crews and to provide training and technical advice.  This role covers all members and not just racing members.  However, there will be a focus on those who are putting in the most hours on the water.  Between October and March, Phil will take responsibility for coaching club crews looking to go to the Nationals.

Phil is a coup for ANA having rowed at both state and national level and he will help us reach another level in our activities.  Phil undertakes his first session today.

There are only 6 days to go before entries close, and the forms must be received in ALBANY by Wednesday the 17th.  So far only 7 entries have been received, out of the 21 ANA members who have said they wish to compete.  There are plenty of forms pinned to the notice board in the boat shed. Please put your completed form and cheque for $45 payable to WA State Masters Games Association into the mail box at the shed, or hand to Nick on Sunday morning.

Check out the related article at http://www.row2k.com/physio/ribprev.shtml

For those of you without the luxury of convenient email access, you can now submit your race entries via the club's Regatta Nominations Page.  You can also find links to this page on the Membership and Home pages.

Please note that entries must be submitted by 5pm on the Sunday before a regatta and entries will not be accepted for racing members who have not paid their membership sub's.  No pay, no row.

ANA fielded seven crews in what was a pretty poorly supported event.  Glyn was bundled out by a youngster from Trinity College in the first round of Open singles in the first race of the day and a similar fate met both Ian Hilton and Jerome King in their singles races.  The successes came in the form of Jess and Sarah, who easily took out the Club double event and to Rachel, Marie, Gloria and Nicole who won the Club four event after a shaky start.  Jess and Charmain lost to more experienced rivals in the final of  the Club and Open events respectively, but still recorded reasonable times.  Jerome, rowing in a Guildford crew, took out the Open coxed four in the club's new Euro.  The Guildford guys were lucky to make the final having been down half a length to Trinity in the semi, when Trinity caught a boat stopper - but its the result that counts!!

Ian Hilton had a more sudden than expected finish to his race.  When Ian was moving at full tilt to the finish line,  a dragon boat decided to turn down the course in the opposite direction in the same lane ending up with the inevitable event of a head on collision at the finish line.  Fortunately, Ian was using some of our standard oars and not the lightweights and they managed to survive the impact against the bow of a steel dragon boat with no apparent damage !

A big thanks should go to the guys who each spent 4 hours putting the course down on Saturday - Glyn, Steve B, Ian H, Ian S, Nick S, John W, Lambsy and John T;  to Siok, Pam and Ngaire who organised the catering and finally to Glyn, Siok, Sarah, Ian S and the Wright family who put the hard yards in to haul the course up again on Sunday

Despite the potential offered by Sarah and Jess learning to drive the dinghy, Glyn provided the entertainment during the pulling up of the course (although the spectacle of Trevor struggling to wind in a cable against a dinghy driven in reverse by Jess had its moments !), by first losing his car keys by leaving them on the trailer carting all the course gear and then, when found by Siok and returned to Glyn, he immediately dropped them in the water when they fell from his shirt pocket as he tried to lift gear out of the dinghy !  Against all odds the keys were found by Glyn burying head and shoulders in the water and groping around the rocks on the river bed some metre and a bit below !  That's dedication for you.

Please Note:  Closing date for entries is Wednesday, the 17th of April.  Entry forms are pinned to the notice board in the shed, and in order to collate them and have them mailed to Albany by the closing date, please complete one per rower and return it to Nick along with your cheque by no later than Sunday the 14th.

Please fill out the personal details on the right hand side of the form and sign the Sanity Clause on the centre section.  As everyone is likely to row in more than one crew, there's no need to fill out the top left crew entry section, as that would then get confusing.  Just tell Nick which entries you want to make and he'll get that info' to the organisers.

Keep an eye on the website message board for further information.

Well, it's been a bit of a slow news week so Golden, you'll have to blame Simon (the Tall Tuscan) Cook for this !

In other news, disaster has befallen the Men's Maiden four with first Jeff and now Richo' having had to pull the pin.  Yes, Lambsy the magician has had yet another crew disappear before his very eyes !  Well, at least the club has heaps of nice pairs for you and Rob to go fast in now.  Besides, it's not all bad news with Jess and Sarah leading a charge back to sweep oar and taking coach Glyn with them.  Along with newcomers Karen and Ruth and ex' 'D' cups Clare and MC (now to be known as the 'B' cups apparently), Glyn's working towards getting an eight up and running shortly.  Jeff and John W both have their novice women's crews back in training and John T apparently has two novice women's quads on the go while on the guys side, Al has got a novice eight up and running which will be the first for a few years.  In the old blokes department, Tim and Denys continue to defy the odds (and the call of the beer fridge !) with their comeback in the pair, John W's crew are getting serious in the four and the vet quad is getting in some early training with Ian filling in for the injured Chris.  Good to see all those new boats being put to good use with around 60 racing members already on the water and there's always room for more.

Yes, we harp on about sticking to the correct side of the course when you row and here's a good reason why.  This article was published in Sydney on February 28th 2002.

"Last weekend at Sydney Rowing Club's Regatta at SIRC, Tim Curtin (UTS member, member of a large rowing family, his Dad Richard was one of the main stays behind organising the rowing at the Olympics, and Tim is one of the leading U23 scullers in NSW who was going for selection this season), was involved in a very unpleasant accident. He was warming down on the correct side of the lake, when a W2X warming up on the lake before heading on to the course rammed into his back. It wrote their 2X off and came within 2.5 mm of leaving Tim as a paraplegic. He now has a large hole in his back where their boat pieced his skin and muscle. His season out here is over. The purpose of this is to remind all your viewers to 'be careful out there'.

Two eights, four fours, three doubles, a kayak and an accompanying speedy, made their way up to the Olive Tree Farm Vineyard on Saturday morning for a very pleasant social lunch.  The journey back was interesting, with at one stage a bidding war being undertaken for the spare seat in the dinghy.  Many of those who went had only completed five sessions for the beginners regatta two weeks previously and did well to make the distance up, let alone the return trip after one or two wines.  All crews returned safely and congratulations should go to Jen, Richo and Lambsy for organising the event.

In other club news, the call away from the dark side seems to be growing in strength.  After a brief foray into the two oared boat to assess the dark side performance the other week, Lambsy seems to be weaving some sort of hoodoo spell over some of the other scullers.  Not only do we have Jess and Sarah now rowing in a four having turned their back on the double, the unswerving Toto and Ian Hilton were seen carrying a pair from the shed on Saturday morning.  However it was only when they wondered why they could not fit their two pairs of scull blades into the two riggered boat did they realise their error and return it to the rack in favour of a double !  The mistake was not long lived and the guys made up for it the day before by beating the two visiting Wests eights and an ANA four back from the Point Reserve jetties on Sunday morning.

Speaking of which Jerome, has obviously come up with the perfect solution for arranging a lie in on a Sunday morning.  Step one: confirm a session in the four is taking place on Sunday morning.  Step two: call up one of your school friends and ask them to come down for a row with you on Sunday morning.  Step three: turn off the alarm !  Well done Dean for handling a 6km handicap race after not being in a boat for twelve months.

The club still has quite a few boats that need a name and we're still looking for suggestions.  Themes are: past members, Aboriginal names and Aussie flora and fauna. Suggestions to Richard's e-mail: wheatful@hotmail.com  or posted into the suggestion box. Approx 22 names needed and explanation of suggested name please !!

Please download this years membership form and get it into the committee asap.

Held on the Claisebrook inlet at East Perth, the regatta includes races for Men's and Women's crews of Maiden and Open standard in the following categories: 1X, 2X & 4+.  That means a total of 12 events this year as there are no mixed races.  Races are on a 'one on one' knockout format over a buoyed 400m and it's a good fun event to be involved in.  Lambsy/Richo, i want to see that four of yours cleaning up the Men's maiden event !

Also, as the club is once again laying the course for this event, volunteers are required to help put down the course on Sat' morning (the 6th) and to pull it up after the event on the Sunday afternoon.  Please get in touch with Glyn asap if you can assist.

ANA Rowing Club has taken delivery of more of its purchases following the return of the trailer from the Nationals.  The trailer went away with two club boats on it and came back with four!!  The additional boats comprise the (winning) Penrith Cup boat which is a joint purchase with Rowing WA and the long awaited WAIS pair/double which had been delayed due to Sykes Racing being unable to deliver the replacement boat to WAIS any earlier.  The club now has minimum weight kevlar boats as follows - two doubles, two pairs convertible to doubles, two coxed fours and one coxless four quad.

Most of this equipment has been sourced from state sports institutes or Olympic crews.  This is backed by another 50 or so club owned kevlar, fibreglass and wooden boats including five eights, twelve fours/quads, six doubles, eighteen sculls and various other trainers.  Our fleet of boats is the largest of any of the Perth clubs and probably one of the best two in terms of the quality of its racing fleet.  The Club still has a further one boat in Adelaide which it is yet to take delivery of.  It is hoped that this can be brought back to Perth following the Australian Masters Regatta in late May.

With access to the most sheltered training water in Perth and the impending appointment of a part time rowing coach/coaching mentor, the future of the club is looking impressive for both recreational and racing members.  The Club is keen to be in a position to give Swans a run for their money for the overall Club Pennant within the next three years and is now beginning to attract a number of experienced rowers as well as developing a pool of talented school rowers who are at the club.  The club is also embarking on additional recreational rowing events and has a busy weekend ahead with a row to the Olive Tree vineyard this Saturday supported by over 50 rowers and a combined breakfast at the club with West's on Sunday which should attract similar numbers and provide opportunity for the club to welcome back Charmaine, Sarah and Jess after their Nationals campaign.

Thanks to the efforts of all Club members and especially Chris Marinelli, the club has generated around $11,500 and a number of members out of the 2002 Challenge Cup Regatta.  The funds will be applied to the purchase of the Penrith Cup boat (coxless four/quad) which arrived last weekend and also to the purchase of an additional Howell scull from the Sunsmart Academy at Canning Bridge.

Yes, the bedlam is over for another year with the running of the most successful Challenge Cup ever on Sunday.  There'll be a full write up shortly along with pictures of the winning crews.  Men's winners on the day were Team F.O.S.L coached by Toto Dellar with the Women's division being taken out by Go Nude coached by perennial finalist Grace Lazuardi.

Well done to everyone involved and especially to Chris for a magnificent effort organising and co-ordinating the event.

Incase you haven't already seen it on the Message Board, here's the latest on how the girls are going at the Nationals.  Thursday proved to be very choppy and in difficult conditions, Jess came fourth in her J19 W1X semi in the morning which means that she progressed through to the B final, putting her in the 9th to 16th placing bracket.  Charmaine came 4th out of 5 in the D semi final of U23 Lwt 1X and will now contend the 7 lane C final, for positions 17 to 25.  Sarah and Jess came last in their semi final of the U19 quad scull (composite crew with Swans) and accordingly will now contest the B final for positions 7 to 10.  The J19 double of Jess and Sarah could not make any inroads into their fellow qualifiers from yesterday and missed out on a spot in the A final in the double and they will now move to the B final to contend places 9 to 16.  The U23 2X of Charmaine and Sarah also had to settle for the B final.

Friday saw strong cross winds and choppy conditions again, which have made the finals at the Nationals a bit chaotic.  Jess finished last in the B final of her J19 single, but that still puts her 12th or 13th out of the 33 entries which was an excellent effort.  Charmaine, sculling in the tougher U23 Lwt 1x, has finished 4th in her C final to place her 16th or so our of the 23 entries in that class.  Well done Granny !  Sarah and Jess completed the day with the B final of the U19 quad where they finished fourth.  Saturday,  Sarah and Jess compete in the B final of the J19 2X and Sarah and Charmaine the B final of the U23 2X.  Charmaine also has a straight final in the Lwt U23 4- and her state women's quad race on Sunday.  Good luck girls.

For those members to new to the club to remember (which is about 99% of our membership), Craig (Mumbles) Ryan aided by his faithful assistant Manuel the super dog, once held the position of club supremo/dictator before mysteriously disappearing off to Kununurra about 10 years ago.  However, the news that Denys and Tim were rowing a pair together has obviously brought him out of hiding and compelled him to make the following observations.  To quote from Mumble's email:

Talking about "are you still alive" subjects, I was rather bemused by the prospect of a pair of dinosaurs in a pair ( I should be well qualified on this subject, as both 'rowers' are several months older than me!!).  I do find this proposition rather unbelievable for the following reasons:

a). Isn't the boatshed in a separate building from the bar ?

b). Can both oarsmen complete the finish of a stroke, or is it inhibited by ample waist girth ?

c). These guys have been rowing that stretch of water since 1971 !  You can't blame that one on climate change !!

d). Does the club have a tub pair for veterans?

Rumour has it Mumbles may also be down at Easter.  Tim, could be time for you and Mumbles to challenge Glyn to another race back from Guildford again.  Just don't forget the hat !

Glyn has set me straight on the allegation that he crushed the Carlin's rudder in the door of the shed, confirming that it is completely untrue.  He was infact moving one of the speedies and ran over the rudder with one of the wheels on the trailer !

The basic message is that the girls have had a fairly good day in the opening rounds.  They have gone to the nationals recognising that they will not be medal winners this year, but to get experience and do as well as they can.

The Semi finals are all held tomorrow including the J19 W4X.  These will be considerably tougher races as the field has already been narrowed.  There is a mixture of 6 and 8 lane finals determined by the size of entry.  All of the singles and the J19 W2X have eight lane finals (more than 18 entries) which means that tomorrow the girls will need the following results to make the main final:

From the spy files comes this latest story of boat related mayhem.  You may have heard that the Carlin was holed a week or so ago and Glyn did his usual top class repair to the hull.  The boat has been on trestles in the 1st bay for a while receiving the relevant number of varnish coats and it was noticed that the rudder on the Carlin had been crushed and therefore had a 90 degree bend (broken) half way along.  With further investigation, it was discovered the culprit was none other than Glyn himself, having accidentally shut the rudder in the door as he was closing it !  Now the big question is, did he report it ?  Must have, to himself probably !  Just how many years experience do you have closing doors Glyn ?

In line with the usual economic indicators that dictate the pace of our life, ANA's fees have risen (very) slightly for the year 2002.  They are as follows:

Full Racing:          $385     Disc'  $370     (Full racing fee also applies for a member who stores a private boat).

Student Racing:    $270     Disc'  $260     (Full time students only).

Recreational:        $270     Disc'  $260     (Non racing membership).

Social:                    $50                              (Use of the bar and recreational facilites).

        Kayak Storage:    $50

The club has upgraded two outboard motors and committed to purchase two more single sculls, which will allow two of the existing Howell sculls to serve as boats with a dual use of  racing and "experienced recreational with Captain's permission" classifications.

Charmaine, Sarah and Jess fly out to the nationals on Saturday Morning so on behalf of all the club, good luck girls !  The boats leave this Wednesday and the girls will be racing in the following events:  J19 1X, 2X and 4X,  U23LW 4-, U23 2X, U23LW 1X and interstate WLW4X-.

You can follow their progress and get all the news from the Nationals on the Rowing Australia website.

Unless you've been studiously ignoring everything to do with club life for the past few months, you'll know that the Challenge Cup is approaching fast.  Due to a sensational promotional effort by Golden and all the crew, we have 60 crews competing on the day.  That means 'the day' is going to be flat out for everyone concerned and that's why we need as many volunteers as possible.

There should be sheets up on the notice board asking for volunteers for specific tasks and we need a large turnout from club members to fill all the spots.  Please sign up and help out on the day as we need all the help we can get and besides, it's good fun.

The 2002 AGM was held on Sunday and as soon as the minutes are available, i'll post them on the website.  Congratulations to all the new members on the committee and also those regulars going back for yet another year, especially John for taking on the role of Captain.  Better start planning where you're going to disappear too John before your full term is up, just like the captain's of previous years.  Check out who's on the committee on the our people page.
