Membership

ANA has a diverse membership, ranging in age from 14 to 75, from people who have been rowing for 40 years to those who have just learnt. We have recreational members who row once a month to elite international athletes who train every day.

ANA welcomes all members, regardless of age, experience and fitness level. There are some basic limits, imposed by the equipment we use. We recommend that members are older than 12 years of age and weigh less than 125kg.

If you would like to have a go at rowing, please got to our Learn-to-row section.

If you have rowed previously and would like to join up, or simply know more about the club, most information you need should be available on this website. For any further queries, please contact the Captain.

We have also had a number of visitors from other clubs interstate and overseas and would love to help you experience our beautiful part of the Swan River. Please contact the Captain. if you will be visiting Perth and would like to come out for a row.

AUSTRALIAN U23 Lightweight quad training video

Aus lighhtweight quad

Alex Hayes (2nd from left) & Hannah Jansen (Far right)
Australian U23 Lightweight Women's Quad

Training in Sydney in preparation for Belarus

As you may be aware, ANA has two members selected to represent Australia
at the Under 23 World championships to be held in Belarus in July.

Hannah and Alex not only have to fund their own way to Europe but
have had to relocate to Sydney for 9 weeks to train in the quad.

ANA is trying to ease the financial burden through some fundraising.
The 1st initiative is Cadbury chocolate boxes (just the thing for cold winter days!!)
If anyone could help out by selling a box or two it would be very much appreciated.

Please email kayj@iinet.net.au or phone me on 9296 4877 or 0417 990 233 and I will get them to you.

Equipment

ANA has one of the largest and most diverse boat fleets in Western Australia. Our fleet consists of over 70 boats, lots of pairs of oars, 3 dinghies and 2 boat trailers. The fleet has been built up from scratch since our original boatshed burnt down in 1961.

Almost all of our boats have been purchased second hand and have been purchased to fill a specific need within the club. Besides the obvious different sizes of boats, boats are also classified into different weight categories and into different grades based on how hard the boat is to row and how light and fragile it is.

To book a boat with a teal or dark blue dot a boat request form must be sent to the captain.

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT BOATS

blue dot Dark Blue dots
If a boat has a dark blue dot on it, you MUST get the captain or vice captains's permission to row this boat and it is not permission for life, or the year or a month! It is permission for that outing or a set training period in view of an upcoming event.

DO NOT row a dark blue dot boat if you have not received express permission from the captain.

To book a boat with a teal or dark blue dot a boat request form must be sent to the captain.

tealdot Teal dots
These are used by intermediate and senior club racing crews. Racing members who have an equipment grade of intermediate can use this equipment.
(approximate ROMS grading of <2.3).

To book a boat with a teal or dark blue dot a boat request form must be sent to the captain.

Grading

All rowing equipment is divided into 5 grades.

Higher graded boats and oars are generally very light, stiff and fragile. This makes the boats unstable and difficult to balance and row. Because the oars are stiff, they can contribute to injuries in inexperienced, unfit or young rowers due to poor technique or incorrect setup in the boat. The equipment is also very easy to break and expensive to fix.

Lower graded boats and oars are heavier but much more robust. The boats are generally wider so they are more stable in the water and easier to row. The materials and construction of oars and particularly boats are different so they are much more resistant to damage by impact or incorrect handling. This makes them particularly suitable for inexperienced rowers.

Our club is run entirely by volunteers. The Committee is elected at the AGM in February each year. We are always in need of more assistance and are happy to see new faces on the committee. If you want to be involved in how the club is run, please consider being on the committee.

Or, if you just want to give a hand with getting things done, or have some new ideas, please come and see us.

President – The person to see for public relations issues, promoting the club and any general queries about the club in the wider environment.

James Carpenter - President

james

Back for a fourth stint as President in 2009, most of you will know James from the highly successful 'ANA Wines' campaign which has been a great fundraiser for the club and also as a member of the club's ever increasing men's veteran group.

James has served on several committees before joining ANA in 2003. He has been involved in all of the club's fundraising activities during his time in the club and will be looking to continue that focus along with reviewing several areas of the clubs operations.

Proving that you can never have too many good people in charge when it comes to money, Siok has held the role of Assistant Treasurer for the past several years and now steps up to the full rank of Treasurer. Siok has done a great job of keeping the money coming in, chasing debtors and making sure the bills get paid and he's played a big part in helping the club get to the strong financial position it's in today.

Siok is also the driving force behind the majority of the catering efforts run by the club each year as well as being Chef in Charge of the Sunday morning breakfasts.

Committee members

Glyn Heath - Committee member

glyn

Glyn started rowing in 1977 at Monmouth, South Wales, and continued at University College of North Wales and Norwich before migrating to Australia in 1988. He spent two seasons at Perth and Collegians before joining ANA in 1989. He has competed continuously over the last 24 years and has not had a season without winning at least one rowing race. Glyn represented Wales as a cox for two years and has competed for various clubs in a number of national title events in UK and Australia. In recent years, Glyn has concentrated on sculling and won several sculling events at State Championships.

Out of the past 15 years, he has been Captain of ANA four times and Treasurer twelve (yes, there was one year where he did both !). Glyn was the driving force behind the club's relocation from Canning Bridge to Bayswater, introduced recreational rowing and the concept of the beginners regatta to the club and has played a major part in the the expansion (and upkeep) of the boat fleet from the 14 largely wooden boats held by the club in 1988 to meet the needs of both racing and recreational members. He also actively pursues any opportunities for improvement to the club facilities.

Jenni Longman - Committee member

Carole Pedri - Committee member

Jill Batt - Committee member - Racing selection
